auDA (the administrator of Australia’s .au domains) has just announced .au direct domain names will be launching in March 2022.

As a local Brisbane business that manages domains for our clients, we wanted to keep you across this development and explain how you can register your interest – and why we recommend all clients do.

What is a .au direct domain?

It’s a new namespace coming to our internet browsers, which means domain names will be displayed directly ahead of the .au ( without the .com in it), such as:

yourdomain.au

This namespace will complement the existing and well-known ones we use every day, such as com.au, gov.au, id.au, org.au and net.au.

When will .au direct domains become available?

The innovation is officially launching on March 24, 2022.

From this date .au direct names can be licensed through an auDA accredited registrar.

There will also be a six-month Priority Allocation period which means that if you own the .com.au and you wish to register the .au – you will be first in line to secure the .au direct version.

We are encouraging all of our clients to consider registering their interest today in preparation for the launch.

Who is eligible for a .au direct domain name?

Businesses, associations, and individuals with a local connection to Australia are eligible for the .au direct name. Unlike other Australian namespaces , .au direct is for general use and doesn’t serve a specific sector or purpose.

What .au direct name can I choose?

You can pick any name provided it meets syntax requirements, is available to be registered and doesn’t already appear on the reserved names list.

How will .au direct affect existing domain names?

The impact on any existing domain names will be minimal, as your current sites will continue to operate as they do today, provided your registration is kept up-to-date.
