In early 2024, we checked in with a client we’d quoted a website revamp almost 2 years prior. They didn’t go ahead with the project because they were too busy at the time. Fast forward to now, and things have gone very quiet.
Their main line of work is from an industry that’s really struggling so the pipeline of work has dried up and this small business doesn’t have any funds available to invest in the website project.
It really is a tough spot to be in because when a business is on the slower side, we know every dollar counts.

But here is the catch, that website project two years ago (when their cashflow was healthier) would have given them time to:
- modernise their online presence,
- improve their visibility to new audiences thanks to search engine optimisation (SEO), and
- strengthen their website traffic.

Firstly, don’t keep putting off key revenue generating projects. When business is good, invest in those high ROI updates.
Don’t try and go it alone. It pays to invest in small improvements like a web redesign or revamp, because when done well it will help create a pipeline of future work so you’re not solely relying on your existing customer base or word of mouth referrals.
Keep your website fresh and up to date
Make sure your products and services are current and relevant.
Relevant is a big one! Your audiences might vary drastically between services. So, if you have multiple audiences, make sure your website speaks to them.
All good things take time… even website design and SEO
Secondly, organic website traffic takes time. So, if you wait until it’s too quiet, you’ll likely need more than SEO alone to bring in work.
That might mean paid ads which can be expensive and if your website isn’t up to scratch, the customers you are visible to might not want to engage further with your business because the user experience is still underwhelming.
